Have kids identify each community vehicle (tow truck, recycling truck, school bus, mail truck) and the community helper who drives it. Talk about how each vehicle is helpful in the community.
Have kids identify the colors on each vehicle and then to find matching colors on the drivers. To help develop color recognition and how to follow directions, challenge kids to mismatch the drivers and the vehicles -- for example, ask them to put the driver with the yellow vest in the red vehicle, or the driver wearing all blue in the green vehicle.
Have kids count the wheels on one vehicle. When they are able to independently count four wheels, have them count the wheels on two vehicles. Repeat this activity until kids can count the wheels on all four vehicles.
Have kids line up vehicles and/or play figures based on details you give. For instance, you might say, "Please put the vehicle that carries children next to the woman in a green uniform."
Encourage kids to tell a story with the vehicles and play figures. For example: The postal worker is delivering mail when his truck breaks down! Who will he call for help?
